The Big Moz

The Big Moz, Mozambique that is, what a fantastic place. Admittedly it helped having a car and boat available, not to mention someone to come in and do the dishes every day! 10 glorious days of hot weather, sunshine, WARM sea and good company.

Eight of us headed up to Vilanculos one Friday afternoon to stay at Tam’s family’s holiday house. Situated just north of the town on a bay with a constant sea breeze to cool down the sun and chase the mozzies away it was paradise! Not to mention the pool that had just been filled up which helped cool us down when the 2 minute walk to the beach was just too much in the midday sun!

We did some great snorkeling where we saw a turtle, moray eel, octopi, little boxfish with guinea fowl like white spots, a massive potato grouper, and loads and loads of colourful fish! Some good waterskiing and wakeboading was had by us all, Tam showing how the slalom was done, JL & Pete showing how to wakeboard (I was very chuffed with myself for getting a whole lot of turns in wakeboarding, just like snowboarding! It was fantastic! Anyone in CT with a wakeboard and boat please let me know when you next hit the water!!!).

Obviously there was lots of sun during the day, though we were lucky enough to have a few overcast days in which to enjoy the outdoors (trust me, when the sun is out in full you need to be under cover!).I’d estimate we went through 10 bottles of sunblock between us in all. Slathering up is a must when you’re taking doxycycline as an anti-malarial. The doxy had the peculiar side effect of making my feet itch after they’d seen a bit of sun- woke up the one night unable to sleep with super itchy feet!!

Some interesting bugs around too..Pete and I had an interesting encounter with a baboon spider that was hiding under his backpack. They look a lot like a tarantula and are known to chase people. Pete almost took me out in his haste to get away but luckily I saw the determination on his face and quickly jumped through the door into safety! He had this to add to the Wikipedia description of baboon spiders:

1. They are the scariest small creature on earth.

2. They are scarier than very scary bigger creatures.

3. They create nests under rucksacks too.

4. Before attacking the owner of the rucksack, they run feverishly in a circle 3 times.

5. Thereafter they attack at blistering speeds of up to 25km/h.

6. Most often the hissing sound is not heard due to excessive screaming from would be victim.

Anyway, I better load this up else I never will, hopefully the pictures load up quickly (ha, fat chance!).No surprise, the pictures aren't loading up!Will try again soon hopefully!

xx
