You know, I’ve been meaning to write about my brother’s 30th birthday party for ages, but work seems to keep getting in the way (and who wants to look at a computer on the weekend?). Anyway, we spent the weekend up in Tietiesbaai and had a great time- there are certainly fantastic sunsets up there and our campsite was really beautiful-right next to the sea- but it’s got to be said that the breeze blowing off the sea (continuously) was rather chill, even though the sun was really hot. Boet got a potjie for his birthday and it was the plan to cook some potjie for the masses. Two really good potjies ensued, with everyone chipping in and chopping veg/directing cooking efforts (i.e. drinking and chirping) and generally contributing to the merriness. While it was a rather chilled evening it was certainly memorable, with fantastic stars covering the night sky.
One of my strongest memories from the weekend is the mass of terns nesting on some rocks a short walk away. A few of us walked out to the rocks and as we arrived thousands upon thousands of terns took to the sky to do some aerial acrobatics- typical documentary style flying with one tern turning to the left and all the birds wheeling in a second and following. They spent about 10 minutes flying above us, wheeling this way and that before they settled back on the rock. Absolutely amazing!
